Abhyanga for Better Health
- By Tim Larson, Ph.D.
I was first introduced to Abhyanga by Dr. John Zamarra, a cardiologist in Southern California. He is an enlightened doctor who has found that the combination of Ayurveda with his regular practice of cardiology, provides significantly more benefit to his patients. He suggested that I integrate Abhyanga into my daily routine. Since I was working more than 12 hours a day and commuting quite a distance on top of that, I felt that my schedule left little time for something called Abhyanga (a light body massage using oil).
But he was persuasive. "Just start out doing your head and feet; it will only take five minutes," he cajoled. I acquiesced and did a full body massage the next morning before showering. Then I meditated and had the most wonderful, blissful feeling afterward. My problems seemed to melt away, leaving me with a clear head to start my day. My increased productivity throughout the day more than compensated for the small amount of time I invested. I quickly became aware that it also helped eliminate accumulated toxins from my body. Abhyanga, along with improved knowledge on Ayurvedic nutrition, melted pounds off my body, restoring it to the same weight I had in High School. I felt more energetic and vital. Abhyanga is a regular part of my routine now.
There are many significant benefits from abhyanga.
- It cleanses the body.
- It flushes toxins and impurities.
- It stimulates the immune system.
- It promotes free flow of energies.
- It helps prevent accumulation of physiological imbalances.
- It rejuvenates both the mind and body.
- It lubricates and promotes flexibility of joints, muscles and tissues.
- It rejuvenates the skin, promoting softness and luster.
- It promotes youthfulness.
Abhyanga soothes important bodily systems, such as the nervous system and the endocrine system through stimulation of the marma points and the cutaneous nerves throughout the skin that connect to every part of the body. It also stimulates the immune system.
Tim Larson developed the first computer program on Ayurveda. His mix of the ancient secrets of Ayurveda with the modern technology of computer programming brought a new interactive experience of Ayurveda, custom-tailored for the user.
